Sherlock X software automates analysis of fire debris to determine the causative accelerant.
Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting a June 2, 2011, fire in a multi-story, single-family dwelling in San Francisco. NIST used its Fire Dynamics Simulator and visualization software to investigate the circumstances and fire behavior that led to untenable conditions on the first floor, where the downed firefighters were found. After failure of windows in the basement, where the fire began, an adjoining stairway became a “chimney for hot gases” that poured onto the first floor. This example root cause analysis examines what we determined to be a Near Miss event. On December 10, 2015 I noticed a construction worker smoking at a gas station near the active gas pumps. Nothing happened. But according to a National Fire Protection Agency report documenting 750 outside fires at service stations between 2004 and 2008, smoking materials, unclassified hot or smoldering objects, hot embers/ash, and cigarette lighters account for 43% of these fires. buildingEXODUS V4.0 simulation of the Rhode Island nightclub fire. The fire conditions are predicted using SMARTFIRE V4.1. The simulation predicts evacuation through available doors and windows. A number of people perish in this simulation due to the rapidly developing fire. The colour coding of the people indicates the response time band for the occupants. The people coloured red reacted most rapidly, they are on the dance floor. The colour of the floor is an indication of the smoke concentration at head height. The darker the colour, the thicker the smoke at head height. Finally, the body markings on the floor represents where we predict a fatality occured - The animation was generated in 2008

This is the result of our master thesis. The program is able to detect open flames. The program is a self learning program so it can learn to classify almost any fire / none fire. Since we had to draw some limits of how small fires the program could find you could see that the program fails to find one fire. The saltpeter and sugar fire are not detected due to all smoke (Smoke detection is not implemented yet).
